The Welder is a classic industrial story about working men trying to survive in difficult jobs to make a living. In this story by designer Tony Bailey a welder is fed up with his work and is thinking about taking matters into his own hands to get out of the system. Will the welder prove strong enough to escape the system no longer be subjected to hard-working conditions?
Although the story shows the basic premises of what the welder about, it did not show us any opponent or valid reason the welder should oppose his working conditions. We haven't seen any demanding and inhuman bosses, no tragedy, no dangerous workplace and no injustice. All we saw was that the welder was working long hours. That's not enough to convince that there is a conflict.
Bailey is more a designer than an animator and it show. He reuses the same animation trick continuously. He uses multiplanes, pans, zooms and trucks to create a sense of motion. The characters barely move at all. In my opinion, he relies too much on the strong soundtrack to carry this project. The story is limited, the animation is limited, but the music is strong. There weren't even welding tools and other industrial sounds.
