I'm not sure the new Nokia smart phones have that sexy factor that makes people go wild about the iPhone. What they offer so far fails to interest me.
The problem with Nokia - and I'm one of those counterculture geek rooting for them to beat Apple - is that they don't get the sex factor of their phones. They still have this vision of what a phone should be instead of what guys like me, and all the other iPhone fans want their phones to be.
To Apple's credit, they understand exactly what I want in a phone. It's a toy. It's a statement.
The problem, is that I don't want my toy and my statement to come from Apple, because, you know, everyone is after that already. I want what's cooler and newer and even more rarer and exclusive than an iPhone. That's why I root for Nokia. I don't want a Blackberry. I have the keyboard with thumb thing. I want something flat with a large screen.
My Nokia N800 is the closest to what I seek, but it's not a phone. It's a computer and it's starting to feel heavy and bulky. Mind you I use it everyday. It's just that useful.
I was rooting for the Nokia Tube, but it's official name - 5800 XpressMusic - is already lame beyond recognition.
That's the type of silly name I expect Macromedia/Adobe to name a release of their new Web development suite. That's not a sexy name for a phone. I can't even mention it in one breath.
Tube is sexier.
Let's hope Nokia gets it, before I have to find a new champion or rally behind Apple - shudder -
